Trans People and The Hate We Love?

Recently I spent time with a group of trans writers- both authors and journalists, discussing the state of the community and the innumerable, growing political and social threats affecting us.

What became clear is how familiar we are with the playbook, having been on the receiving end of skewed discourse, violent propaganda and an desperate need for progress across the world. It is a startling reality that most of the statistics and research that demonstrate our immediate peril have not changed for the better, but either stagnated entire or worsened over the last five years, impacting children, parents and access to basic human rights.

While it can feel overwhelming- desperate even- as we raise our voices to meet the concerted effort to push us to the fringes of society, erase our history, label us as public threats, it merits a look at how we present the information and data we want the world-at-large to consume regarding us.

One thing seems undeniable; we’re more likely to share negative or contentious news articles and social media posts from our most aggressive and radicalized detractors and thrusting them into the global spotlight than we are to share insightful, informative or affirming content about us. With respect to the platform that anti-trans activists enjoy and exploit as they aggregate a like-minded, toxic army beneath…
