To Hell With Resolutions. Write Yourself a Love Note Instead

Millions of Americans fall victim to this weird tradition of creating a list of “New Years Resolutions.” The resolutions amount to extravagant wish lists from themselves, to their selves, regarding things they believe they need to do to be a better person or achieve a higher quality of life.

You’ve probably done it. I have. You might be surprised to know that over 60% of adults who celebrate New Years Eve make resolutions. The most typical Resolution made by people between 24–38 are to lose weight, followed by drinking less, getting a better job, eating healthier, starting an exercise regime and meeting someone new. The problem is, we often set these goals with the right intention, but the wrong motivation, and this can lead to feelings of disappointment, personal failure, discouragement and a lack of faith in ones own ability to simply do better on behalf of themselves.

It’s a trap.

It’s a trap set by indoctrination and for some reason, we’ve accepted that January First of X year is some great restart; A new beginning where suddenly our slate is wiped clean. Like a Phoenix from the ashes, we are reborn, made anew, and most certainly don’t dare to fuck it up this time around. From this perspective, we place ourselves in the roles of our judge, jury and executioner. We berate ourselves…
