The Sims Centers Lesbian Wedding and Zero Controversy
I never imagined we’d be here, but well done Electronic Arts!
Do you remember, not so long ago, when an appearance by any figure in a video game that so much as implied anything detouring from heterosexuality sent conservatives and angsty gamers into a fury? Over the years, while LGBTQ+ content has slowly been granted more broad representation, there has been one mainstream title that has lead the charge when it comes to inclusivity in their nuclear brand, and this week Electronic Arts, developers of the iconic brand The Sims, have shown the world they’re just getting started.
A trailer that dropped for the latest game pack titled “Wedding Stories” spun to the powerful Etta James ballad “At Last” (Redone brilliantly in Simlish) featured a began with a simple enough concept; A young man and woman deciding to tie the knot. She chooses a wedding dress, together the pick out a cake, but as the date of the nuptials inches close, the protagonist begins having second thoughts as feelings begin to surface for her best friend- another woman. While this might sound contrived and salacious, it it greeted instead with a beautiful and welcoming normality that frames personal happiness rather than culturally embedded tradition.
