Republicans Vow To Reverse Marriage Equality
Democrats, who currently control the House and Senate, had initially lined up to force the GOP on a vote to take measures to protect same-sex marriage, but have made the decision to wait.
Republican have made it resoundingly clear that controlling the Supreme Court provides them an advantage in their pursuit of overturning the landmark Obergefell vs. Hodges ruling in 2015 that forced every state to recognize marriage equality after years of states leaders making it a ballot issue instead. In every conservative states, the issue always failed to pass, continuing the long, painful tradition of disenfranchising LGBTQ couples and withholding from them the rights afforded to opposite sex couples.
Republicans want to overturn the 7 year-old law and return control of the decision-making to the individual states where, if it fails to pass, could see countless marriages immediately nullified- along with the basic rights straight couple have always enjoyed- such as the right to make decisions on behalf of an impaired partner; The right to be formally recognized as family members and receive healthcare and pension benefits, tax breaks, and shared ownership of assets.
