Historically, the genre of horror has been dominated by men. Now that’s about to change.
As early as the 60’s, the genre of horror has been besieged by outdated character tropes. You know them. They’re deeply embedded in our culture and so predictable they’ve often been satirized. Scantily clad young women, having graphic sex, making ridiculously embarrassing decisions that always leads to their graphic demise- often at the hands of a masculine protagonist in the form of a monster or serial killer. One deviation of that formula has been Sleepaway Camp, which used the concept of being transgender as a shock factor leveraged to amplify the horror theme, a trope that has been widely used by the film industry .
The genre of horror has not been one that could be considered inclusive when it comes to acknowledging transgender people. In most capacities, perhaps with any industry, the inclusion of minorities in film or television reboots sends fanboys and hyper-conservatives bellowing about “wokeness” failing to realize that society is full of people who do not look like they do or believe what they do because they haven’t bothered opening up their eyes to reality as it exists beyond their narrow world view.
