Cardi B Posts Transphobic Content On Social Media Then Denies It Was Her
Cardi B’s rise to international fame was swift. Such an abrupt thrust into the spotlight can tend to leave a sudden celebrity rather unprepared when it comes to adapting themselves to communicating to audiences of diverse supporters.
Rapper Cardi B is the perfect example of someone who was not ready to speak responsibly from the platform she has been given. While many of us appreciate artists remaining authentic instead of becoming manufactured products from the industry machine, sometimes they show us an ugly side of themselves that leaves fans disappointed. With respect to her demonstrated lack of social refinement- such as routinely courting controversy and getting into public, physical altercations with other celebrities while attending posh soirees- her bigoted rhetoric has reached a level that rivals even fellow artist Azealia Banks.
This weekend, the new mother took to her verified Facebook page to post an unexpected meme that blindsided all of her trans fans and their allies.
There was no context for the post which seemed entirely random, like a 3am Donald Trump tweet. Naturally, it upset many people while at the same time, fetched a lot of jokes at the expense of Transgender folks in the comments that ensued. The consequence of this? A further reminder that fans of Cardi B must be complicit in the occasional hurled insult- or red bottom shoe- at those who identify as transgender among them.
A little reprieve between the laughter reactions and transphobic slurs that peppered the responses were the few people who rebuked the post and came to the defense of the trans community and the use of such hateful language postured as a comedic meme. The backlash grew as the post was shared over a thousand times, and within hours, Cardi B took to twitter to announce that she didn’t post the status and claimed someone on her team has been in control of her verified page for over a year.
This might be a plausible excuse had the Bodak Yellow singer not used the very same slur in a video posted to her instagram a year ago. In the video, she issues a stern warning to her boyfriend, Offset, that should he cheat, she would “Have a Tra**y” handle him.”
It’s pretty evident that Cardi B isn’t necessarily a stranger to abusive language or offensive references to transgender folks. Even more precarious is her use of the same word, repeatedly, a year later. It’s pretty hard to deny the fact that she speaks and acts impulsively, often to her own detriment- and sometimes to the detriment of others who enjoy her work, but feel suddenly betrayed by her unprovoked insults toward a community already finding it difficult to thrive in an hostile political climate. It goes without saying that any trans person or trans supporting ally found themselves with a target painted firmly on their backs as Cardi loyalists berated them for being “Overly sensitive” and “Lacking a sense of humor” as they created a myriad of excuses for her reckless hate speech- and then blamed those on the receiving end. This is pretty typical routine for Trans folks, having to walk a fine line in any community not exclusively trans, lest they be subject to unified abuse. Cardi B gave the transphobes of her base the greenlight to launch an assault on trans people just for being there. Perhaps she doesn’t understand the repercussions of her actions, but that’s reaching, given how we’ve seen the emboldened racism provoked by Donald Trump across the nation.
Her established pattern of anti-trans rhetoric makes it difficult to believe that the meme came from anyone else but Cardi B herself.
There are a few issues with her explanation, however. Primarily, her facebook, which she claims has been under the control of a former employee for the past year, has been extensively promoting her album release, concerts, merchandise, sponsored products and appearances as recently as ONE MINUTE AGO.
To compound that, why would a celebrity of Cardi B’s magnitude allow her brand to be controlled by an ex-team member- the only one she claims has access to the account- for a year? Does Cardi B strike you as someone who would allow any third party to represent- or misrepresent her statements leveraging her platform? And why would a past employee still be promoting her content as if they are still, in fact, working for her?
It’s more likely that this is just Cardi B. Unapologetically. Getting herself into trouble once again. We either have to accept her for the quality of character she has displayed over and over again, or stop supporting an artist whose claim to fame may have been a catchy tune, but who is clinging to fame by become a socially reprehensible spectacle.
