As Hate Crimes Rise, UK Not Tracking Deaths Of Trans People
With trans people under attack by the media and hate crimes against transgender people up by 81%, the UK government claims it is too hard to identify transgender victims.
The last time the topic was addressed was in 2018, in a piece published by Channel 4 leading up to the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. The article by Georgina Lee used some data provided by the Government Equalities Office entitled “Trans People in The UK” which shared some basic statistics, such as estimations of how many people in the UK identify as transgender- roughly. In fact, so rough are the estimates that the memo released by the Government, upon posing itself the question “How many trans people are there?” responds immediately with “We don’t know,” and asserts the fact that “No robust data exists.”
The memo goes on to cite other statistics provided by Stonewall, the largest Charity in the country serving the LGBTQ+ community. In a poll taken by the charity organization, they discovered 41% of trans men and trans women had experienced a hate crime or violence provoked solely by their gender identity. They also reported that 25% of transgender people across the UK had experienced homelessness.
