A Competency Test for Political Candidates? Please.

I have to take a test before I can drive on the roads.

Hopeful political candidates should be required to take a competency test before they can drive the country.

No. I don’t mean Man. Woman. Person. TV. Camera.

Why do we simply take it for granted that our politicians are qualified to make decisions of vital record simply because they boast an Ivy league degree. Intelligence, acquired knowledge or retention of information learned in a classroom doesn’t equate or imply the possession of competence.

It is safe to suspect that some of our most visible politicians wouldn’t pass. A few have already demonstrated they even their most basic education hasn’t served them in serving their people. For example, Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) recently revealed during the confirmation hearing of Justice Ketanji Jackson Brown that she doesn’t know the difference between the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. That should have been more alarming to the public than it appears to have been.

Perhaps that is because we have been rapidly desensitized to the abhorrent behavior and shock and awe statements made by elected officials who now occupy our nation’s most sacred seats of law and guidance. The respect that these institutions once commanded from the public has eroded to a veritable reality show of temper tantrums, outlandish accusations and internal fighting that has obstructed any service the civilians of this nation might…
